How To Choose Your Next Business Mentoring Program

So you’re ready to hire a business mentor… congrats!   It’s a huge step, because investing in yourself and your business is absolutely critical to your success.

But now what?

The great news is there are a ton of mentors and programs to choose from. And the bad news is… there are a ton of mentors and programs to choose from.

There are a lot of people out there promising that they can take you and your business to the moon and back.   But with such a big and important investment on the line, how do you evaluate who can actually deliver on those promises, and how do you arrive at the right program for you?

Fortunately, that decision can become very clear when you follow this 10-part checklist:

1. Are YOU ready to take 100% responsibility for your results?

There’s no point in hiring a mentor if you’re not.

A mentor isn’t going to replace what it is that you ultimately need to do for yourself. They can show youwhat to do, but the bottom line is that you’re who is responsible for doing it and for creating the results in your life.

2. What’s the outcome you want to create?

At Goddess Business School®, we call this the magic question.

Are you just starting out and you want to get your first clients?   Do you know that 6-figures is part of your path and you want to set the foundation?  Or have you been at it a while and you’re ready to make the leap into 6-figures?  When you’re clear on your outcome, you’ve just narrowed the playing field to those programs that truly deliver that outcome.

3. What’s the experience you wish to have?

There are big programs and there are 1-1 programs. There are programs with live events or in-person communities and programs you can do virtually.

What kind of an experience do you desire, and what does your lifestyle require right now? Do you want to be one in a big crowd, or do you prefer the intimacy of personal support? These are important considerations when choosing your program.

4. Does the mentor have the results?

This may seem like a basic question, but there are a lot of mentors out there are talking a big game but who haven’t actually done what they profess to teach.

The experience and track record of the mentor is an important factor. Even if they are just a few steps ahead of you, you want to be sure they have actually created the result the are going to be teaching you, preferably over and over.

5. Does the program deliver the results?

How are their past clients doing, and are there great testimonials?   What are past clients saying about the content?  You can’t necessarily get a sample of the content before you step in, but the mentor’s free content can give you a great indication of the quality of content and teaching you’ll receive at the paid level.

6. How tight is the container?

The “container” of a program is the structure of any program and its ability to keep you in the energy you need to be in to achieve results. This can include frequency of contact, space between contact points, level of personal attention, etc. If you’re only connecting with your mentor or community once a month, it can be very hard to stay on track.

For example, at Goddess Business School®, we created our container very intentionally with tons of touch points such as weekly Q&A calls, private coaching, masterminds, and a very active Facebook community (where I participate personally), so there’s always an opportunity for people to be connected and get support. nThat’s a tight container.

7. Private coaching included?

These programs are a significant investment, but very few of them include personal or private support. Yet support and accountability are a must to bust through fear, doubt, overwhelm, confusion and to get clarity on business decisions.

If you really want to take your business to 6-figures, we strongly recommend being in a program where you get ample private coaching from a trained coach, who can cut your learning curve in half, help you avoid costly mistakes and quickly transform the “inner game” that comes up along the way.

8. How much access do you have to the mentor?

Surprisingly, in a lot of programs you see the mentor once at a live event or maybe you have a Q&A call once a month (with potentially hundreds of people). This doesn’t enable you to build a strong relationship between you and the mentor.

That’s why in Goddess Business School® we broke the mold and chose to offer weekly Q&A calls with me, so that I can create real relationships with the clients who choose to participate.

9. Inner game as well as outer game?

Marketing strategy is great – in fact it’s a necessity. But without the inner work and the correct mindset you can end up with a bunch of tools you never apply.   Look for a program that helps you transform as a person, and helps you grow into who you need to BE to have a thriving business.

Can the program integrate into your life?

Your business is not going to build itself – you will need to make it a priority.  What are you willing to say NO to, in order to say YES to the business you really want?

Once you’re clear that your life is going to look differently with your business in it, you can decide: what work flow is REALLY going to be doable for you?   Can devote a big block of time to learning, or does it need to be flexible so that you can work it in between other commitments?

Look for a program that gives you the ability to keep your commitment to your business in a way that allows you to honor your other priorities.  (And ditch what is no longer essential – like mental drama!)

And finally… are YOU ready to take action?

No business mentoring program will “work” unless you take action.  Are you ready to take the aligned actions required for your success?

If your answer is “no,” you have to ask yourself: what’s it going to take?

If you ARE ready and you DO take action, the right business program can be the best investment you ever made.  With this checklist, you can be certain of your decision.

Now go find your new mentor!

How Much of Yourself Should You Share in Business?

Soooo loving my clients right now….

In one of our private groups, there is a candid, juicy discussion about those “edgy” parts of ourselves that are calling to be expressed, and the fear letting those parts be really SEEN and out there.

One of my clients practices the paradigm of open relationships. Another is a shaman. I challenged another to discover “the thing” that she’s not sayING, yet.

As for me, well… I’m a witch.

A lot, LOT of women ask me about how I found the courage to integrate the Goddess into my business. The answer is, I couldn’t NOT.

I had spent over 10 years hiding from my family, and it was incredibly painful. I can still see myself sitting on our bed in our Brooklyn apartment, me with my Caroline Myss archetype cards and Leland laying there reading his book and our two black cats (yes, really) as I flipped through the deck trying to find what I was supposed to call myself.

I said, “I can’t be a Queen, that’s already taken.” (Note the mindset.)

“And besides, I’m not a Queen. The only thing left here is Goddess. And I can’t call myself Goddess, because that’s ridiculous.”

He said, “That’s the only thing you CAN call yourself.”

And he was right. Thou art goddess, Goddess.

This was in 2008 when I was a hot mess. The Feminine was markedly NOT everywhere in the online space, like she is now, what with all these amazing women being seen and visible and sharing their secret selves, gifts and superpowers.

So yeah, it was a little more edgy.

But being open about it in my business was a stand I had to take for myself. Ten years was my limit of being in the closet. I remember feeling, “Enough is enough.”

At the same time, I also made the conscious decision NOT to flaunt it. As it just IS, so it is in my marketing. Little winks, here and there. Natural, no big whoop. Because it just is.

When you are open about who you really are, you inspire others and give them permission to be who they really are. It’s one of the greatest ways we can serve our peeps.

AND at the same time, you can’t make it about you. At the end of the day, nobody cares about the witch thing. Yes, I’m an initiated priestess. So is every other woman out there right now who is ready to walk through the gate, claim her lineage, creates a practice and BE that.

We are all beautiful and unique snowflakes.

So how do you incorporate those parts of yourself that are crying OUT to be expressed in your business?

Here’s how you DON’T do it. You DON’T turn yourself inside out trying to find a “so what do you do?” statement that lets everyone know you’re a 3rd Degree High Poobah or whatever. Or cling tightly to your idea of what it HAS to look like. Remember, your – ahem – inherently limited perspective is just one of a zillion that exist simultaneously.

You do it by just doing it.

You do it by NOT hiding it, whatever “it” is.

You do it by doing the work of removing the layers so your Divine Self – your Essence – can come through, and go about your business from that place.

You do it by bringing in the wisdom and the knowledge and the life experience you’ve gained, when it’s in service to whatever you happen to be doing, designing or delivering for your clients.

And that’s my challenge to you, this day. To drop the struggle of self expression and instead just express yourself.

If your lineage is meant to be part of your niche, message, or tag line, or logo, or whatever… it will emerge. I promise.

And either way, you will be free. You will inspire. Others will SEE you and what many of my colleagues call your “Divine Right Clients” will be naturally drawn to you.

Your presence and Essence is enough.

3 Secret Reasons Why Clients Say “I Can’t Afford It”

So there you are, on the phone with your latest potential client.  You’ve had a transformative conversation.  You both know that working with you is the best next step for them, so you make the offer of your services. And then it comes… “I’d love to, but… I just don’t have the finances right now.”

Uh oh – the door of possibility has been slammed shut by the money concern. Or has it?

Many conscious women coaches, mentors and practitioners hear concerns like “I can’t afford it” and take them at face value.  And of course you don’t want to be pushy or try to get your client to do something against their best interest.  But here’s the problem… most of the time (think 80-90%), the words

“I can’t afford it…”

“I don’t have time…”

“I have to think about it…”

… are a smokescreen.

So there’s something else going on, and it’s one of 3 things.

1. It’s not a fit.  They truly don’t need what you have right now.  This one is pretty unlikely, especially if you’ve gotten to the point in the conversation where you’re making an invitation. (Indeed, you wouldn’t be making it in the first place if it wasn’t a fit, right?) But it happens.

2. They haven’t seen the value – yet.  In other words, they don’t really know why they need it, or why they should invest with you.  That doesn’t mean that they don’t need you, just that they don’t understand how what you do will help relieve pain or solve a pressing challenge that they are experiencing – yet. :)  (Closely related: they don’t know why they should invest with you right now.)

3. Some form of fear.  Now this is the biggie.  Stepping up, going out on a limb, making a powerful shift – even when your client sincerely wants to change her life, it’s still going to trigger fear.  That part of her that wants the safety of the status quo will kick in – you can count on it.

And then there are other fears: fear of turning you down, fear that they can’t get the results, fear of not being liked, fear of being judged… the fears go on and on.

So how do you uncover the REAL issue… without being pushy?  The answer is to get curious, stay detached, and ask questions.

When your client is standing at the threshold of changing their life, their “squishymind” is doing everything in its power to sabotage them.  They need you to take a strong stand for their truth.

And this is soooo important, because when people give into their fear, they miss out getting your help to get what they really want.  And you miss out on – literally – thousands and thousands of dollars in income over time… not to mention living your purpose.

The Next Time You Hear “I Can’t Afford It,” Try This Script…

“I hear that [finances, time, etc] is a concern for you. May I ask you a question about that?”

People are rarely challenged when they bring up the money concern.  You’re going into uncomfortable territory when you bypass the socially acceptable move.  So before going there, you want to be respectful.  Otherwise, you may lose your potential client’s trust (and the sale).

At this point, you want to find out if it’s really about the money.  If it’s about value, back up in the conversation and return to their problem and the cost of not getting it solved.  If it’s truly about the money, you can refer them to someone else, or help them find the money.

It’s easy to take “I can’t afford it” personally or break the tension to ease some discomfort.  But remember, this conversation is about your client’s decision to truly change their life.  By not buying into their excuses, you take a strong stand for them and empower them to make a different choice, the next step along their journey to health, wealth and happiness.

The 7 Essentials of a Divine Feminine Lifestyle Business

“The world will be saved by the Western woman.”

You may remember this now-famous statement spoken by the Dalai Lama at the 2009 Vancouver Peace Summit.

Much time has passed since then and around the globe we’ve seen the truth of those words in action.  The question is, as conscious women entrepreneurs, how do we answer this call without giving up our relationships, our self-care and our lives to do it?

Early on, I made a conscious decision to follow a Feminine path: to think outside of the box and create a business that supports and encompasses ALL of who I am.  I coined the term “Divine Feminine Lifestyle Business” to describe a business that…

  • Creates a generous income (think 6-figures or more)
  • Creates a big contribution (women business owners giving back)
  • Truly supports you and your feminine spirit
  • Truly supports the life you wish to live

When I’m asked what it really takes to create a business that hits the “sweet spot” of all four elements above, certain key pieces immediately come to mind. Here’s a quick checklist of 7 essentials:

1. Solve a pressing problem for a specific person. Yes, I’m talking about your niche. It’s important to have a compelling niche because people invest in problems they want solved. If you’ve been hearing, “Sounds great, but…” from your potential clients, chances are you’re not solving a problem that’s pressing enough for your peeps.

Bonus tip: Don’t get hung up on this idea of having to choose the perfect, forever niche just to get started. The only way to discover your niche is to make a decision and get into action!  In The Essentials Training, we teach our clients to focus simply on choosing a pressing problem and make that your focus for the next 30-60 days… we call it a “next step niche.”

2. High-end offers. Offering 1-on-1 work at low fees (or giving away too much of your time) is a recipe for burnout, frustration and resentment. It’s also a guaranteed way to keep yourself stuck at a low income level.  Instead, as soon as you can, create a high-end offer that preserves your time and creates financial leverage, fast.

Not sure what kind of program to offer?  Consider a 90-Day High-End Intensive.  90 days is long enough to create significant results, and yet short enough so that you’re not holding the energetic container fortoo long.

3. Systems. Certain tasks need to happen in your business consistently in order for you to generate income, such as marketing, follow-up and client care. You need systems to make sure that they don’t fall through the cracks. The beauty of systems? They can be handed off to someone else, freeing you up for your brilliant work.

4. High-service team.  Nobody creates a 6-figure business alone! And really, why would you want to? Creating community is a natural strength for women (what I like to call your Divine Feminine Gifts); you may not realize that you create community by way of your team, too.

Most entrepreneurs wait to build their team.  Instead, the time to bring on your first team member is… now!  The key is to have your team pay for itself every month by having clear systems and giving them income-generating tasks, right from the start.

5. Your email list. You don’t need a big list to create multi-six-figures – I’m living proof!  And once you’ve got the basics of your offers and “getting out there,” it’s time to grow your circle and tap into the leverage a list of ideal, qualified potential clients.

While you don’t want to put your email list before creating income, you do want to give it serious attention if you wish to create a business that generates a lot of income without you having to work all the time.  Plus, communicating with your list is an opportunity to build relationship – another one of our Divine Feminine gifts.

6. Strategic alliances. A single partnership with the right strategic alliance can fill your business with clients, add thousands to your email list, and much more. No matter where you are in your business, start creating these relationships now. And if you know some movers and shakers already, now is the time to ask, “How can I create a win-win-win partnership?”

7. The mindset of a Feminine Leader. The distinction between the woman who consistently creates high-income months and the woman who just gets by is… who she is BE-ing.  So consciously approach your business as the Feminine Leader you truly are.  Not someday, but right now.  (Yes, that part of you exists right now!)

When you are BE-ing in your higher self, or Feminine Leader self, you’re aligned with your Creative Spirit. You’re tapped into the Divine.  Yes, challenges arise and yes, sometimes you’re putting out a lot of energy.  But it’s different than overwork and overwhelm.  You are on purpose, and your actions are intentional.

In the Essentials Training, all of our clients start the process by consciously claiming their leadership and crafting beliefs of a Feminine Leader – then quickly shift into them by taking action from that place.

If you’re like the majority of women in the Goddess Business School® community, you’ve got BIG dreams, an even bigger purpose and a commitment to a life you love.

Making it happen gets down to implementing the Essentials – exactly what you need, when you need it, and nothing you don’t.  Focus on these 7 essentials and soon you’ll experience more of the ease and spaciousness you long for in your business – while creating generous income and impact along the way.
